I’ve finally tapped into something greater than myself, and it didn’t arrive with fireworks, resolutions, or a clean slate. It showed up quietly, right where I already was. When I look down at my coin and see the words To Thine Own Self Be True, I’m reminded of something simple and unsettling: nobody is coming to save me. That’s not bad news—it’s freedom. I don’t have to do this for anyone else, I don’t have to prove anything, I just have to be honest with myself. There’s a crack in the system of my drinking, there always has been, but I didn't find it until now—it is a small opening where truth sneaks in, a pause, a hesitation, a moment where I know deep down that the old way doesn’t work anymore. That crack is where grace gets in, and I’ve learned to exploit it. Nothing—absolutely nothing—is as important as staying sober just for today. That first genuine smile I’ve had in a long time will disappear, the small but real sense of integrity I’ve proven to myself will vanish, all of it gone the moment I take the first drink. So just for today, I hold onto this thought until my head hits the pillow. The opportunity is now. The time is now. I’ve tapped into something bigger than sitting on a barstool, bigger than noise, bigger than escape.
You ain’t seen nothing yet.
What’s your simple game plan to stay connected and stay sober today—who are you calling, where are you going, or what are you doing to make sure your head hits the pillow sober?
