Spiritual Maintenance Required

OCTOBER 1 — Spiritual Maintenance Required

“We have a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.” — Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 85

Some days we can forget recovery isn’t a trophy we won — it’s a car that still needs gas. We can coast for a while, thinking we’ve got this figured out, then wonder why the whole thing starts sputtering. What we usually find is that we stopped doing the little stuff: the prayers that felt dumb but worked, the calls we didn’t want to make, the quiet check-ins that keep us right-sized.

Maintenance isn’t glamorous. It’s the oil change nobody thanks us for. But that’s where the peace hides — in the work nobody sees. Humility isn’t a posture; it’s knowing the engine only runs because we’re not the ones who built it.

Hasn't the trouble usually started when we confuse progress with graduation — like we’ve somehow earned a break from what keeps us alive?

What does daily maintenance look like to you?
