“Wherever Possible”

Step Nine says “wherever possible,” which sounds simple until real life gets involved.

Some people are easy to locate. Others are gone, unreachable, or connected to situations where contact is complicated. Sometimes the possibility exists physically but not safely. A phone number may still work while the relationship behind it has become something entirely different.

The phrase avoids two extremes. It does not say every amends must happen in exactly the same way, and it does not say discomfort makes an amends impossible. Possible is wider than convenient but narrower than reckless.

It is like finding a road on a map. A road may exist, but that does not tell us its condition, whether a bridge is out, or who else is traveling on it.

What does “wherever possible” mean to you?
