October 29 – The Worst Gift
“Don’t put off ’til tomorrow what you can screw up today.” — Unknown
“Promptly” doesn’t mean “after I cool off,” or “once I’ve justified it a little more.” It means right now. That small window before pride kicks in and starts rewriting the story. When I delay admitting my wrongs, it’s usually because I want to stay the hero in my own head — but that delay has a cost. It lets resentment start brewing, in me or in the other person.
A resentment’s just a wound that never got cleaned out. And when I won’t own my part, I’m basically handing someone the worst gift ever: the gift of potential resentment. Nobody needs that. Least of all me.
People are naturally prone to resentment; I don’t have to feed it with my silence or my ego. A little humility early saves a whole lot of damage later.
When was the last time you made it right promptly?
