Another Day Sober

Nothing But the Truth

JANUARY 13 – Nothing But the Truth

“The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club.” — Fight Club (1999)

I had my own Fight Club going for years, and rule number one was the same — don’t talk about it. Don’t talk about the bottles hidden behind the detergent, or the way I’d drink just enough to feel “normal.” Don’t mention how I’d wake up at 3 a.m. with my heart racing, swearing I’d never do it again — then do it again by noon.

I lied to everyone, especially myself. I thought I was protecting people, but what I was really protecting was King Alcohol — ruler of my life, destroyer of my peace. I obeyed every command.

The night I finally told the truth, it broke me wide open. It wasn’t some polite confession; it was messy, snotty, desperate — the kind where all that comes out is, “I can’t do this anymore.” But in that wreckage, something moved. It felt like a match got struck inside me — not the kind that burns things down, the kind that shows you there’s still something left to rebuild.

Sometimes honesty still stings, but it’s better than living in the dark.

What’s something you don’t have to hide anymore because you’re sober?
