An amends may be deeply meaningful to the person making it and completely unexpected to the person receiving it.
The receiver may be at work, raising children, caring for someone, or simply living a life that no longer includes the old relationship. A surprise appearance can turn an intended repair into an emotional ambush.
It is like arriving with a moving truck because we finally decided to return somebody’s chair. The chair may belong to them, but they still might want advance notice before the truck blocks the driveway.
Timing and boundaries do not make the mistake less real. They recognize that the other person has a life beyond our readiness. Step Nine includes them as a person, not merely as a name waiting to be crossed off.
