“I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys R Us kid.” — Toys “R” Us jingle
If Alcoholics Anonymous has been simply put as trust God, clean house, help others, then the question becomes, what’s getting in the way of that? A lot of us, before we got here, were pretty selfish, still holding onto ways from childhood. Some say we never grew up. Maybe we did, maybe we didn’t. Maybe we just avoided the whole conversation. Avoided responsibility, avoided looking at ourselves, avoided anything that might slow us down.
Then we get into AA and start hearing people open up about their lives, things they never thought they’d say out loud, and what’s happening for them is so big it’s impossible to deny that something greater is at work. We hear those stories and can feel we’re on the cusp of something bigger now. At the same time, we know something else too. We’ve sabotaged our own growth in the past. We’ve stalled out, distracted ourselves, gone back to what’s comfortable. So when it’s time to move forward, there’s that pull to hesitate again.
Are we stalling on cleaning house because we still want to play with the toys of distraction? That stuff still calls our name. But now we’ve got something we didn’t have before. We’ve got directions, support, and a fellowship that’s actually showing us how to do this thing, showing us a new way of life that is working.
So maybe today isn’t about overthinking it. Maybe it’s just about taking the next step without hesitation, because we finally have a real shot at this.
Where am I still stalling, and what’s one step I can take today instead of reaching for distraction?
