"We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve..."
Recovery can turn into a constant search for the next thing. The next meeting. The next step. The next program. The next answer. Before rushing off to what's next, don't forget what you've done here.
Maybe you've just made it through detox. Maybe you've sat through your first A.A. meeting. Maybe you've said your first meaningful prayer in years. Maybe you've started working the Steps. Maybe you've simply made it through another day sober. Whatever it is, don't overlook it. You're allowed to smile again.
Alcoholics have a habit of focusing on the distance still left to travel while forgetting how far we've already come. We get so busy looking ahead that we fail to recognize the small victories that make the rest of recovery possible. There was a time when many of us couldn't make it through a single day without a drink. Today, we're doing things we once thought were impossible.
None of us got sober all at once. We got sober one decision, one action, and one day at a time. Don't forget what you've done here. The same willingness that brought you this far can carry you farther than you ever imagined.
What is something in your recovery that once seemed impossible but has now become part of your life?
