Another Day Sober

Save Your Own Skin

“We have no right to save our own skin at another person's expense.” — Big Book, p. 72

We got the warnings and didn’t listen. We knew help was out there, yet we kept doing what we did anyway. We’re the ones who bottomed out, alone, confused, and wondering what the hell happened, so now it’s time to talk about it honestly. This is our inventory, not theirs.

That takes real courage. Because our natural move is to build a case, explain ourselves, and point at what everyone else did wrong. The alcoholic mind loves a defense attorney.

But this step isn’t about saving face. It’s about getting free.

We don’t get to throw other people under the bus to make ourselves look better. That kind of thinking kept us sick. So the question is simple: where did we go against our own good nature?
This is the beginning of a thought process that will continue day by day for us.

Where am I still defending myself instead of just owning it?
