“Made” Means Action

The first word of Step Nine is “made.” It is an action word. Step Eight deals with becoming willing; Step Nine describes willingness beginning to take shape in the world.

Recovery contains plenty of thinking, talking, praying, and preparing. Those things matter, but “made” points to something that moves beyond intention. A person can sincerely intend to fix a leaking roof for six years. The buckets in the living room still know the difference between intention and repair.

That does not mean every name on a list leads to the same action. The rest of the Step adds care, judgment, and concern for harm. “Made” simply tells us that an amends is more than a private realization.

The word is short, but it separates wanting to be different from allowing recovery to become visible.

What does the word “made” add to your understanding of Step Nine?
