When Contact Would Cause Harm

There are situations where contact itself may create fresh harm.

The other person may have established a firm boundary. There may be danger, abuse, legal restrictions, or a history that makes renewed contact damaging. Step Nine’s exception exists because an amends is not automatically helpful simply because the intention is good.

Imagine someone finally falling asleep after years of noise next door. Knocking on the window at midnight to apologize for the noise still wakes them up.

The desire for relief is understandable. Carrying guilt is heavy. But the Step’s wording keeps the other person’s welfare inside the decision. It distinguishes feeling better after confessing from repairing what can be repaired without causing another injury.

How does Step Nine separate relief from repair?
