Another Day Sober

Amends Is More Than “Sorry”

Many of us said “sorry” long before we got sober. Sometimes we meant it deeply. Then the same behavior showed up again wearing a different shirt.

An apology and an amends are related, but they are not identical. An apology acknowledges regret. An amends looks at the damage connected to the mistake. If a window was broken, the word “sorry” does not put the glass back together.

This helps explain why changed behavior appears so often in conversations about Step Nine. Words may open the door, but consistency gives them weight. Someone who has heard ten apologies may notice the eleventh one differently when the old behavior finally stops following it.

Step Nine is not anti-apology. It simply describes something larger than a sentence.

What is the difference between an apology and an amends?
