“That’s gonna leave a mark.” — Tommy Boy
No matter what we tried, it still sucked. Some of us quit booze and switched to pills instead. It worked for a while. We felt in control again. Then one day we felt so good we decided to drink booze on top of the pills. That one hurt. It wasn’t just our bodies that took the hit, it was our confidence. We thought we had this handled, and we proved to ourselves we didn’t.
The bruises fade, but the memories don’t. It’s hard to forget that kind of proof that we can’t control this thing.
The people in AA have shown us that life doesn’t have to be a string of meaningless drunken nights.
How many times do we have to get hurt before we finally believe we can’t win?
