Excitement

November 25 — Excitement

“We are then in much less danger of… excitement.”

The character Lloyd in the movie Dumb and Dumber really nails this whole excitement thing. Alcoholics of my type can treat that movie like a documentary. All the dumb stuff I did in my drinking career fits right into that universe. Sure, the movie is absurd, and so were my decisions. Excitement can flip straight into psychotic wishful thinking if I’m not grounded in a Higher Power. In the Lamborghini scene, these guys are broke, unemployable, and barely holding it together—but the second Lloyd gets excited, he blows the cash on a Lamborghini so he can “fit in” with a ritzy crowd. Classic: excitement hits, fantasy kicks in, reality goes out the window. Man, I can relate.

The program gave me a tool that saves me before I end up in hot water again: “Thy will be done.” What would God have me do right now? If we pause and wait out that little adrenaline spike of excitement, we can usually make a decision that’s grounded, sane, and not just another self-centered stunt. It works. It really does.

What’s one “excitement moment” where you almost acted too fast—but paused long enough to let God get a word in?
