“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
— Carl Jung
Along the way, a lot of us can look back and realize we did live by principles. Not exactly spiritual in nature — but principles nonetheless. Work hard, play hard. Never trust a man who doesn’t drink. Don’t take no crap from anybody. Never take no for an answer. You can sleep when you’re dead. Don’t get mad, get even. And other total liabilities...
While drinking, a life of indulgence, conformity, pride, and control seemed almost natural. For a time we thought we had it figured out. Then King Alcohol pulled the rug out from under us and showed us who was the real undercover boss. At the final moment we stumbled our way into AA, defeated.
Has it become obvious yet that we need to wake up spiritually? That our old ways will likely get us locked up?
Have we considered making the decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of a God of our understanding? Could this idea mean we make a handshake deal to start questioning our old instincts and lean on the spiritual principles we seek in the Twelve Steps?
What old “principle” from your drinking days still tries to sneak into your thinking today?
