We Stay Sober

JANUARY 21 – We Stay Sober

“You’re not alone, even if you feel like you are. You just haven’t met your people yet.” — Unknown

I’ve been coming to meetings regularly now, and things are starting to feel different. The shakes are gone. My head’s a little clearer. For the first time in a long time, I can actually sit still.

One night I looked around the room and it hit me — everyone there had one really, really bad night that brought them to AA, just like me. Nobody showed up on the wings of victory. We all came in looking for answers. I thought I was different. Turns out, I was just alone.

The first word of the First Step is We — and that word saved my life. I don’t have to figure this thing out by myself anymore. There’s help all around me if I’m willing to take it. All I really have to do is keep coming back.

And still, there are days I drift back into that old thinking — trying to handle life solo, forgetting what brought me here in the first place. That’s when I need the reminder: I get drunk… we stay sober.

Where do you still catch yourself trying to do this alone — even though you know better now?
