Every morning is an opportunity to treat untreated alcoholism. A lot can happen while we’re sleeping—pathways snapping back, drunk dreams, anxieties creeping back in, old desires reconnecting in the mind. Resentments sneaking back in. And when we wake up, we’ve got a choice: get right for the day, or just truck along ignoring our condition. The Big Book says the alcoholic is a very sick person. We’re not cured. What we have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. A lot of us have taken responsibility for that and tackle alcoholism first thing in the morning. Regular prayer is suggested. Maybe it’s a meeting to get right. Maybe it’s some quiet time to organize the day and make sure we’re close to God. Maybe it’s spiritual reading. One thing we start to realize is resentment isn’t real—it’s our alcoholic mind hijacking us, trying to edge God out. So we bring ourselves back, we get close again, and we gather up another day sober.
Are you edging God out right now?
