Dec 23 — Selfish vs. Self-Seeking
I was at a meeting once and heard a take on the whole self thing that finally stuck.
A lady leaned back in her chair and said:
Selfish is when I have something and you can’t have it.
Self-seeking is when you have something I want—and I’m coming to get it.
That pretty much covers my entire spiritual autobiography.
Different flavors, same illness. Whether I’m hoarding, grabbing, comparing, or plotting—it's all still me sitting in the middle of the universe, keeping score. Call it selfish, self-seeking, or just plain self-centeredness. Same umbrella. Same rain.
And here’s the annoying part: the fix is boringly simple.
Go help someone else.
Not to look good. Not to fix them. Not to earn points. Just to get out of my own head for five minutes. Make a call. Hold a door. Listen without correcting. Do something small that doesn’t benefit me at all.
I hate how well it works.
What’s the difference between selfish and self-seeking in your own life—and what’s one small way helping someone else has snapped you out of it?
