December 29 — Everything… or Nothing
It really wasn’t until AA that I realized God is everything… or nothing. And which one I see is kind of up to me. If I want to notice God at work, I can. If I don’t, I don’t have to. Nobody forces it. For me, though, it’s all good. Even the stuff I used to call mistakes.
Because here’s what keeps happening: I try to do the next right thing, I get a little off course, I screw something up—and somehow that “mistake” ends up launching me forward. It turns into a lesson I couldn’t have learned any other way. A correction, not a punishment. A weird win.
I once heard a guy in a meeting say, “Grace is the free gift of auto-correct on your life.” That’s about the best definition I’ve ever heard. As long as I don’t throw in the towel and pick up a bottle, life keeps adjusting me—quietly, gently—toward something better than I had planned. I get experiences I never had before. A sense of fulfillment I never knew was missing. And when I look back, it all seems connected… even the wrong turns.
Where have you seen something you thought was a mistake turn into a correction—or even a gift—once you stayed sober and kept going?
