December 17 — What’s Next?
Luckily for me, the gift of desperation had me by the throat. Once I saw that the Steps had a way of returning drunks to something resembling respectful citizens, I was all in. I worked them hard and fast, not out of spiritual maturity, but because I wanted relief. I wanted the promises. I wanted a psychic change. I wanted that gorilla off my back. I wanted my family to look at me like I wasn’t a liability anymore. Honestly, I just had enough desire stacked up that drinking finally lost.
That kept me sober long enough for the right answers to start showing up.
After I finished the Steps for the first time, I looked at my sponsor and asked the most natural question in the world: “Okay… what’s next?” He told me to go home and write down everything I’d ever wanted to do in life. So I did. Travel the country. Get married. Be a real dad. A bunch of other stuff too. I brought the list back the next day and said, “Here it is. Now what?”
He leaned back, gave me one of those sponsor looks, and said, “Now go do it.”
Turns out sobriety wasn’t the finish line. It was the starting gate.
What is something you always wanted to do in life?
