Another Day Sober

The Old Adam

"The Old Adam in us should, by daily contrition and repentance, be drowned and die..."

Ever hear that little voice that says, "Ah, screw it. Just this once." Or the one that has to be right, has to get even, has to have the last word, or wants everybody to know we got screwed? Ever catch yourself halfway through one of those moments and think, "There I go again." Maybe that's what Martin Luther meant by the Old Adam. Not some demon hiding inside us. Just that old way of thinking that keeps trying to pull us back to self.

Recovery doesn't ask us to pretend he isn't there. It asks us to notice him. To recognize those old patterns before they take over. To ask God for help, and then do the next right thing anyway.

Stick around long enough, and something starts to change. Some of those old reactions don't even sound like us anymore. What used to feel natural starts to feel foreign. And when doing the next right thing starts coming naturally... that's a hell of a psychic change.

What does your Old Adam usually sound like?
