Serious Consequences

Some amends involve more than hurt feelings. They may include crimes, custody, employment, financial liability, or the safety of other people.

The seriousness does not erase the mistake, and the existence of a mistake does not erase the consequences of addressing it. Step Nine contains both responsibility and caution because real life does not fit neatly inside a meeting slogan.

It is the difference between changing a light bulb and working on the breaker box. Both involve electricity. Only one may affect the entire building.

The Step’s meaning remains the same, but some situations carry more connections, more risk, and more people. That complexity explains why careful guidance is often part of how Step Nine is discussed in recovery literature and meetings.

Why might some amends require more care than others?
