“To Such People”

The phrase “to such people” points backward. Step Nine is not creating a brand-new cast of characters. It refers to the people already identified through the inventory and the Eighth Step list.

That connection matters because memory can be selective. Left alone, we may remember the easiest names and misplace the uncomfortable ones. We may also add people because we feel guilty, even when the situation does not belong on an amends list.

The earlier Steps give Step Nine a foundation. The list is not a popularity poll, a revenge roster, or a collection of everyone who ever looked disappointed in us. It grows from a specific examination of our mistakes and the harm connected to them.

“Such people” keeps Step Nine tied to the work that came before it.

How does Step Nine connect to the list made in Step Eight?
