Another Day Sober

Nothing Insures Immunity

December 2 — Nothing Insures Immunity

“You can’t just kill. You have to find people, you have to help them. That’s the whole point.”
— Eastman to Morgan, The Walking Dead

There’s a moment in The Walking Dead where Morgan is completely out of his mind, trapped in his own fear and pain. Eastman doesn’t fix him with a lecture or a threat. He offers him a switch of the heart — a way back to being human. And it’s simple: Find people. Help them. Not just killing a population of zombies. That’s the point.

That line gets me, because it’s the same thing AA handed me. I used to think recovery was all about killing drinking by controlling myself — locking down the chaos, muscling through cravings, white-knuckling my way past every bad idea and pretending everything was fine. And sure, that works for about… two seconds. But it never brought any peace.

What actually changed me was this quiet, inconvenient truth: I’m supposed to help people.
Not fix them. Not preach at them. Not bully them into being sober.
Just help — the way someone helped me.

There’s something mystical about it. When I'm talking with another alcoholic, something switches on inside me that I can’t create on my own. Suddenly I’m not trapped in my head. Suddenly I’m useful. Suddenly I’m reminded why I’m still here.

The Big Book wasn’t lying — nothing insures immunity from drinking like working with the next person who’s still suffering. You can find them anywhere: detoxes, meetings, hospitals, a phone call you didn’t want to answer. Most days I walk away knowing the truth AA has been saying since page one: they helped me more than I helped them.

When’s the last time you thought you were helping someone else… and realized afterward that they were actually helping you stay sober?
