Another Day Sober

Working on Myself

AA has been called a lot of things. Group therapy. A self-help program. A place to get your life together. But a more accurate description might be a process of self-abandonment. We’re learning to loosen our grip on self-reliance and move toward God-reliance without tripping over our own feet in the process.

Because if “working on ourselves” was the answer, a lot of us would have nailed this years ago. We already worked on ourselves. We managed. Controlled. Planned. Justified. Rearranged reality. Protected our image. Followed our feelings straight into the ditch.

This process in the book points in a different direction. Less self-will. More thy will be done. Slowly but surely, we begin letting go of the need to run the whole show, even when surrender goes against our deepest nature. Especially then.

Are you trying to recover, or are you still trying to manage yourself into peace?
