I Don't Need To

One of the unexpected gifts of recovery is realizing there are a lot of things I simply don't need to do anymore. I don't need to have the last word. I don't need to prove I'm right. I don't need to answer every criticism or fix every problem the moment it shows up. I don't need everyone to understand me, agree with me, or even like me.

For a long time I confused peace with getting my way. Today I've found that peace usually comes from letting go instead. The freedom isn't in controlling every situation. It's in realizing I don't have to.

Every time I choose patience over proving a point, or walk away from an argument that doesn't need to happen, I get a small reminder that recovery is working. Life gets a little lighter when I stop carrying things I was never meant to hold.

What's one thing recovery has taught you that you simply don't need to do anymore?
