Another Day Sober

one day at a time

Lust

When we hear the word lust, most of us immediately think about sex. That's certainly part of it, but for many alcoholics, lust goes much deeper. It's our mental obsession that just found a new toy.

Before recovery, that toy was alcohol. We couldn't stop thinking about it. We planned around it. We justified it. We chased it, believing it would finally make us feel okay.

Then we got sober.

But if we're not careful, our minds simply find something else to obsess over. Maybe it's money. Maybe it's a new truck. Maybe it's Facebook Marketplace. Maybe it's a relationship, a promotion, golf clubs, a boat, food, respect, politics, or having everyone agree with us. The object changes, but the obsession stays the same.

How many of us have spent weeks researching something, watching YouTube videos, checking prices, and convincing ourselves, "If I can just get this, everything will be different." Then we finally get it... and before long we're already looking for the next thing. Sound familiar?

The problem was never just alcohol. The problem was a mind that always wanted one more thing. Recovery isn't about learning to chase better toys. It's about learning to be content with what God has already given us. That's a freedom no purchase, promotion, relationship, or hobby could ever give us.

What "new toy" has my mental obsession been chasing instead of finding contentment in God today?
