Another Day Sober

Old Movies

Some memories play like old movies in our heads. We know every scene, every line, and exactly who the villain is. We have watched them so many times that our version of the story can feel like the only possible version.

Step Eight can interrupt the movie.

When we look at harms, we begin noticing things that weren’t in our original script. Maybe we weren’t as innocent as we remembered. Maybe fear was underneath our anger. Maybe someone we blamed for years was reacting to behavior we refused to see. That doesn’t mean everything was our fault. It means we are finally willing to look at the whole scene.

Recovery gives us the chance to stop editing the past just to protect the person we used to be. We can see ourselves honestly without hating ourselves. The story doesn’t have to change, but our understanding of it can.

Is there an old story about my past that looks different to me in recovery?
