Another Day Sober

one day at a time

No God, No Problem

“AA has a wrench for every nut that walks through the door.

Some of us came in with no use for the word God. Some were angry. Some were frustrated due to their old ideas. Some of us just didn’t believe in anything we couldn’t see or measure. And a few of us figured if this whole deal required signing a spiritual contract, we were out.

Apparently, we weren’t the first ones to feel this way.

We started hearing people use different acronyms for G.O.D. — Group Of Drunks, Good Orderly Direction, Gift Of Desperation, Grow Or Die. Some said it meant the Great Outdoors. Some said Grace Over Drama. It didn't matter if we all agreed on the definition, that's personal, and somehow… it still works.

Confusing at first, weren’t we all supposed to agree?

But the longer we stayed, the more obvious it becomes: the point isn’t what we name the power. The point is that it gets us out of the center long enough to move us into a higher level of consciousness. The kind of power that can interrupt self-will, and as a result keep us sober.

We had spent years arguing with definitions while our lives fell apart. Now we were watching people with wildly different beliefs stay sober, rebuild relationships, and find some peace. Not because they solved the mystery of God — but because they tried to use the power behind the definition one day at a time.

What if the point isn’t defining God, but getting out of our own way? What if willingness matters more than terminology? What if the results are the only proof we need?

What did you use as a Higher Power when you first came in — and how did you know it was working?
