Another Day Sober

Relationship Status

One of the quietest forms of lust isn't always sexual. Sometimes it's the belief that if I could just find the right person, I'd finally be okay.

Recovery doesn't tell us relationships are bad. It reminds us that people make terrible Higher Powers.

When we expect another person to fix our loneliness, give us purpose, or complete us, we place a burden on them they were never meant to carry. Before long we're disappointed, they're overwhelmed, and resentment begins to grow.

The Big Book doesn't promise that another relationship will fill the hole inside us. It points us toward a relationship with God that changes us from the inside out. Healthy relationships become a gift instead of a rescue mission.

Ironically, the more we stop looking for someone to save us, the more capable we become of loving another person well.

Am I looking for a partner, or am I looking for a savior?
