Open Mind, Open Heart

November 6 – Open Mind, Open Heart

“So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.” — Carl Spackler, Caddyshack

“Be quick to see where religious people are right.” That line has always stuck out. It’s a touchy subject because, for me, church used to mean showing up for all the wrong reasons. When AA introduced the idea of spirituality, I was hesitant. It sounded like another version of what hadn’t worked before. But the program suggested something different—keep an open mind. Spirituality, they said, comes from within. Use a God of your understanding, or not, it's your life. We're just telling you what worked for us.

Over time, that line—be quick to see where religious people are right—kept echoing. It’s not in there by accident. Staying open-minded when talking with people of faith—whether a pastor or just someone who genuinely believes—has become part of conscious contact itself. That kind of awareness can’t really be taught; it grows from the inside out.

Once that little spark got lit, truth started showing up everywhere—a line from a sermon, a verse in a song, a Facebook post. The source didn’t matter; the message just landed differently. That’s how it works for me: a personal understanding of God that builds, one small spark at a time. It’s not my job to bash someone else's way now that I finally found my way. Kind of arrogant when I think about it.

When’s the last time something spiritual came from a place you didn’t expect—and you actually let it in?
