“If you don’t go for it, you’ll never know.” — Zack Morris, Saved by the Bell
A few have heard in the rooms: three frogs are sitting on a log. One decides to jump off. How many frogs are left? Three. We know that answer because we’ve lived it. We’ve made decisions our whole lives — no drinking tomorrow, to drink differently, to really mean it this time — and somehow we were still sitting on the same log. Decision alone never moved us. If we want off the log of alcoholism for today, a decision has to be followed by action.
Step One broke through the delusion and handed us honesty. At this point, we realize willpower fails us utterly. We try to outthink our drinking, outrun our drinking, and control our drinking — and we keep losing. Sitting in meetings, we have found hope and came to believe there is something bigger than willpower, something that works when we can’t.
Now we’re standing at the turning point. We know what happens when we drink. We’ve come to believe being sober is possible. We’ve loosened our grip on old spiritual ideas and found hope that this works. Step Three doesn’t ask us to have it all figured out right now — just to take one small step toward acting with honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness, and see what happens today.
Are you jumping for today? — or what’s keeping you sitting on the log?
