Another Day Sober

one day at a time

Ready for the Next Step

We started Step Eight with a list. By the end of it, we may discover that the real work wasn’t the paper at all. The work happened inside us.

We looked at people we harmed. We looked at things we neglected. We noticed our excuses, our scorekeeping, and the stories we told ourselves about the past. We began separating what others did from what belonged to us. Most importantly, we started becoming willing.

We don’t need to finish this step perfectly. There may be names we remember later. There may be harms we understand differently with more time. Recovery has never required perfection from us. It asks for honesty, willingness, and continued action.

Tomorrow we begin moving toward Step Nine, where willingness starts becoming action. We don’t have to run ahead. We just need to bring what we have learned with us.

We made the list. We looked at our part. We became willing. That is enough for today.

What has Step Eight taught me about myself that I didn’t see before?
