Another Day Sober

Get Honest or Get Drunk

“Get honest or get drunk.”

As we’ve been hanging around AA, we’ve probably heard that one tossed around. Not exactly a warm hug. Truth is, neither option sounds great at first. We just came out of a drunk, and yeah… that one was a doozie. Odds are we’re trying to make it our last one.

Now here comes the other option, honesty. Real honesty. The kind where we sit down with another person and with God and start letting out the stuff we’ve been carrying around for years. Not the polished version. Not the “I’ll tell you just enough to look good” version. The real deal. And yeah, that can feel just as scary as picking up again.

But here’s the thing we start to hear from people who’ve actually done it. There’s something on the other side of that honesty. Freedom. It might not make sense yet. It might not even sound believable. But it’s there.

So now we’re standing here with two things in our pockets. In one pocket, our Fourth Step, everything we’ve written down, ready to be shared. In the other pocket, our pride, telling us to hold back, stay safe, keep control.

Which pocket are you reaching into this time?
