If there is a name we’re unwilling to put on our list, we really ought to question why. Sure, if we are legitimately putting ourselves in a dangerous situation, that is worth talking about. We don’t just blindly charge ahead. We talk frankly about all of this with a trusted friend who has followed this path.
But what if that isn’t what’s going on? Are we creating another self-centered story again, one that makes the whole situation about us, and our perspective? Are we letting fear creep into our actions again? Do we still think we have more control over outcomes than we really do? Maybe we have already decided how the whole thing is going to turn out before we’ve even taken the next step.
Maybe somewhere along the way our egos started taking our God-given sobriety for granted. We started patting ourselves on the back for all the work we’ve done so far. We started making it about us. Our progress. Our recovery. Our decisions. Maybe we forgot that we’re not alone anymore.
Is there a name we’re unwilling to put on our list, and what story are we telling ourselves about why?
