A New Freedom and a New Happiness

The first Ninth Step Promise describes new freedom and new happiness.

Freedom here does not sound like getting everything we want. It sounds more like no longer arranging our whole life around what we are afraid someone might remember. Old names, streets, phone calls, and unopened messages lose some of their power.

Happiness also takes on a different shape. It may not be fireworks. Sometimes happiness is seeing someone at the grocery store without immediately abandoning the cart and hiding behind the frozen vegetables.

The word “new” matters. This is not the temporary relief many of us chased before recovery. It grows from facing reality rather than escaping it.

What kind of freedom do you hear described in the Ninth Step Promises?
