Sometimes in a quiet moment, we look back after this whole Fifth Step and realize we’re almost halfway through. That’s kind of wild. We hear in meetings all the time that half measures availed us nothing, and it makes sense. It’s not like we ever walked up to a bartender and ordered half a beer. It wouldn't have done the job. When we drank, we usually went all in. No moderation. No careful planning. Full commitment to bad decisions.
So now we’re trying something different. Really doing this thing. Not just collecting slogans, not just telling our story, not just circling recovery like it’s a hobby. We’re applying what we’ve learned so far, and if we’re doing that honestly, life should be getting better. Maybe not easier in every way, but at the very least, easier to not drink at.
Half measures kept us stuck because we wanted relief without surrender. We wanted the promises without the process. But somewhere in this work, something starts shifting. The obsession loosens. The noise gets quieter. We stop negotiating with ourselves quite so much.
Turns out we were never afraid of doing too much. We were afraid this might actually work.
Where are you still trying to stay half in and half out?
