Just Finish the Damn Thing

October 23 – Just Finish the Damn Thing

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

I’ve got a bad habit of stopping at about 85%. I’ll fix the door but leave my tools laying around for weeks. I’ll clean the kitchen but leave one cup in the sink. Somewhere in my head, I tell myself, good enough, I’ll finish later. But later piles up, and before long, I’m living in a world of half-done projects that quietly eat at my peace.

When I start leaving things unfinished, it’s not because I don’t care — it’s because I’ve let myself get overwhelmed again. My brain starts spinning with all the little things I’ve been avoiding, and suddenly everything feels too big. Then the irritation sets in — not with the world, but with myself — and my self-esteem takes the hit, and I’m back to telling myself I’m never good enough.

One day, I saw that old Nike commercial: JUST DO IT. And weirdly enough, it clicked. I didn’t need to conquer the whole mountain — I just needed to take one bite-sized step at a time. That’s what this program taught me: break it down, keep it simple, and follow through.

So I made a list — every unfinished thing sitting in the back of my mind. Turns out, it wasn’t that bad once I saw it in black and white. And one by one, I started knocking them out: fix the door hinge, pay that old phone bill, take my dad to lunch, make it to a meeting. Each checkmark gave me a little more peace. Turns out, progress feels a lot like relief.

When life feels too big today, ask — what’s the easiest thing on my list that I can take care of today, and make a start?
