Another Day Sober

Fireworks

Alcoholics love fireworks.

Not the ones in the sky—the ones we create. We had a way of making every argument bigger, every problem louder, and every room revolve around us. Good attention or bad attention didn't matter much, as long as we got it.

Then Step Seven starts doing something strange. We don't need to be the loudest person anymore. We don't have to win every argument or have the last word. Humility has a way of settling us down. It doesn't make much noise, but it changes everything.

Real recovery isn't nearly as flashy as we imagined it would be. Most days it's quiet. And that's probably the point.

When was the last time humility kept you from creating unnecessary fireworks?
