Another Day Sober

one day at a time

It Fell

“I didn’t find God. I just stopped dodging long enough for something to hit me.” (overheard and never forgotten)

Many of us can say we didn’t have a lightning bolt moment. No choir, no burning bush, no sudden spiritual makeover. What happened was quieter than that. At some point, the idea of something bigger just fell on our shoulders from finally being in the right place long enough.

We kept showing up. We stayed sober long enough. We stayed connected to other alcoholics long enough for something to change. We kept coming back even when we didn’t feel spiritual, inspired, or remotely interested.

Then one day, almost without noticing, we did something kind in a moment where we would have normally lashed out. No big decision. No spiritual announcement. Just a different reaction than usual. What surprised us was that it felt good, and seemed to come out of nowhere.

That’s how it starts for a lot of AAs. With small, almost unconscious actions that went against our old nature as we came to believe. At some point, we caught ourselves wondering what had changed in us, how this new attitude had gotten there—and how we might stay connected to it a little more?

Trying to stay honest, open, and willing — has that started to change your peace of mind at all?
