December 15 - Two Things We Don’t Care About
There are two things we genuinely don’t care about in AA. The first is what your Higher Power is. Nobody should care — except for one small detail: it can’t be you. Other than that, call it God, Energy, Nature, Love, or Steve. If it keeps you sober and gets you out of self, you’re doing fine.
The second thing we don’t care about is how you like to have sex. That’s not our lane. Some people like it plain. Some people like it spicy, like they’re on an all-pepper diet. Either way, it’s none of our business. AA is not a lifestyle review committee.
We don’t avoid these topics because they’re taboo. We avoid them because we’re alcoholics. We have opinions, judgments, and hot takes on everything, and if we’re not careful, those things turn into resentments — and resentments are how we get sick all over again.
So we keep it simple. We’re here to help you get sober and learn how to deal with resentment when it shows up. The rest is God’s job. Our job is to stay out of the damn way.
What’s something you’ve learned to let go of in AA that you used to have a strong opinion about?
