“We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that’s all.” — The Breakfast Club (1985)
When I first walked into a meeting, I thought everyone was judging me. I sat in the back, arms crossed, ready to bolt. But something weird happened — people smiled at me anyway. Nobody cared what I looked like or how bad I’d messed up. They just nodded, like they already knew. The only requirement to be here is a desire to stop drinking — and I have that. These other people do too. So maybe I belong here after all. Belonging feels good, but I know how fast shame can talk me back out the door. I earned my seat here. Am I willing to keep coming back?
What helps you remember that you’ve earned your seat here?
