Another Day Sober

one day at a time

Spread 'Em

In the destructive phase of our drinking, we spread the consequences of our alcoholism everywhere we went. Our families felt it. Our friends felt it. Our jobs felt it. Missed games. Broken promises. Calling off work. Wasted hours on the clock. Hangovers. We became so consumed by our drinking that doing the next right thing rarely even crossed our minds. Untreated alcoholism has a way of touching everything around it.

Then, at the final moment, we came to AA looking for a solution. We started doing a few simple things. We stayed sober one day at a time. We prayed. We made amends. We tried to be useful. We didn't set out to change the world—we were just trying to stop destroying our own.

Something strange begins to happen. Without forcing it, recovery starts spreading too. Our families notice we're showing up. Our coworkers see someone they can count on. Friends begin to trust us again. Peace replaces chaos a little at a time. Joy, freedom, and usefulness have a way of rippling outward just like alcoholism once did.

We may never know how far those ripples travel. That's okay. Our job isn't to measure them. It's simply to stay sober today, do the next right thing, and let the rest spread on its own.

What am I spreading today?
