An Eighth Step list can look pretty depressing if we misunderstand what we are doing. Names, mistakes, broken relationships, old behavior. It can start to feel like we are building a written case against ourselves.
But the list isn’t a sentence. It is a path toward freedom.
These are things we have carried around with us, sometimes for years. We remember the lie. We remember the person we avoided. We remember what happened even when we pretend we don’t. Step Eight brings those things out of hiding and puts them somewhere we can finally deal with them.
We aren’t making a list because we are terrible people who deserve to feel terrible. We are making a list because recovery has given us a way to stop running from our past. What once followed us everywhere can finally be faced, cleaned up when appropriate, and eventually put down.
What might I be free from if I become willing to face what is on my list?
