Step Nine is where the list from Step Eight begins turning into something real. Until now, much of the work has happened on paper and inside us. Step Nine brings that work into our relationships with other people.
An amends is often confused with an apology. An apology says we are sorry. An amends recognizes a mistake and attempts to repair what can be repaired. Sometimes that includes words. Sometimes money, time, honesty, or changed behavior says more.
It is a little like borrowing a neighbor’s lawn mower, breaking it, and returning it with a heartfelt speech. The speech may be sincere, but the mower is still broken. Step Nine is concerned with the mower too.
The Step also includes limits. It speaks about what is possible and about avoiding further injury. That makes it more thoughtful than simply admitting everything to everybody.
