The whole Fourth Step process can be a real mind bender, or it might be more accurate to call it a heart bender. At this point we have our list, we are finally seeing things more clearly, and now it is time to take it a step further into forgiveness. The people who hurt us were potentially spiritually sick, just like us. The whole thing can start to look like spiritually sick people doing sick things, and we ended up hurt and good and drunk over it.
So we realize that these people were spiritually sick, and we begin to shift. Instead of holding onto it the same way, we try to move it onto a spiritual plane and give our hearts a chance to step in. The mind wants to figure it out, keep score, and make things right. The heart just wants freedom.
And maybe that is what this line of action is getting at. When we loosen our grip on it, when we stop trying to collect on it, when we stop needing it to be different, there is a kind of freedom in that. Not because it did not matter, but because we are not carrying it the same way anymore.
And it works. It really does. Not perfectly, but enough. Enough to breathe, enough to feel a little lighter, enough to move forward.
So here is the question. Which is bigger, your heart or your mind?
