Another one of these Fifth Step promises is that we begin to feel the nearness of our Creator. Well, that sounds like more good news. A lot of us come into AA and connect the dots pretty quick that a Higher Power seems to be part of this whole staying sober deal, so we start looking all around for something that makes sense to us. Trying to “find God” becomes a regular thought, and sooner or later, some wise-ass at a meeting will probably say, “God’s not lost. You are.” Blunt, but true.
Because most of us weren’t spiritually disconnected because God wandered off. We were the ones doing donuts in the parking lot with the map upside down. But here’s the promise: if we take this Fifth Step business seriously, if we do it with all our might, something shifts. We start to feel the nearness of our Creator. Not because we suddenly became monks. Not because we became perfect people. Not because we finally said the perfect prayer.
It just happens.
Are you still lost?
