Another Day Sober

one day at a time

We Look, But We Don't Stare

Having realized that the root of our alcoholic behavior is self-centeredness, we begin to develop a different way of looking at life. We still look at our character defects, the past, the future, the ups, and the downs—but we don't stare. We take an honest look so we can see what needs to be done, then we do the next right thing.

Sometimes we catch ourselves replaying yesterday, rehearsing tomorrow, or sitting with a resentment longer than we need to. Sometimes a character defect shows up again and we'd rather spend the day beating ourselves up than taking the next right action. Recovery gives us another option. We acknowledge it, accept it, make it as right as we can, and move on.

Life gets messy. We're all just trying to do the best we can with what we've got today. We look, but we don't stare.

What have I been staring at lately that only needed an honest look?
