Guilt and responsibility can look similar from across the room. Both may involve recognizing that something went wrong. The difference appears in what happens next.
Guilt often circles the scene. It repeats the memory, announces that we are terrible, and then repeats itself louder. Responsibility looks at the mistake and asks what belongs to us.
One is like sitting beside a flat tire and insulting ourselves for driving over the nail. The other recognizes that the tire is flat and understands that the trip has changed.
Step Nine is built around responsibility rather than endless self-punishment. It does not erase regret. It gives regret somewhere to go besides another lap around our head.
How would you describe the difference between guilt and responsibility?
