Another Day Sober

Same Willingness, Different Direction

JANUARY 15 – Same Willingness, Different Direction

“You can’t stop what’s coming.” — No Country for Old Men (2007)

I used to be willing to do anything to get drunk — lie to my family, hide booze in places they wouldn’t find, drunk-drive across town at 2 a.m. — whatever it took. I called it commitment back then, but it was really just selfish desperation dressed up like freedom.

When I got sober, I thought willingness meant being good, saying yes to everything, or trying to look like a saint. But it’s the same muscle — it just finally points toward life instead of death. The question isn’t whether I have willingness; it’s what I’m feeding it.

I used to chase the drink with fire in my gut. Now I try to chase sobriety with that same hunger. Some days, though, I still feel the pull to chase the wrong thing. That old energy doesn’t disappear — it just waits for direction.

What’s one thing you’re willing to try today that you wouldn’t have tried before?
